For several years now, Majo Caporaletti has viewed painting as a refuge and a method for understanding. A space for thought where the question of what lies behind—on the other side of matter and spirit—insists on appearing.
This new exhibition brings to light a series of internal landscapes that evoke the sensations imprinted on her body during a trip to the Atacama Desert. There is no desire to record here. That was the purpose of photography, a tool that fulfilled its function as an archive. Painting, on the other hand, operates as a device for sensory reactivation: a means of revisiting that space and connecting with the emotion that a landscape awakens.
In these interior landscapes, a seemingly real world opens up to the strange, to mystery. Majo brings together in his paintings, again and again, the action of two opposing forces to provoke the explosion of matter. After approaching the forces of nature and participating in their secrets, his canvases are filled with allegories of the processes of dissolution and recomposition, of change and rebirth, of living matter. In effect, they arise from the desire to capture, through the light of painting, a light as vast as that which floats on water, which illuminates the face of another, the light that hides behind the eyes.
In line with his research and spiritual quests, these images symbolize the transformation of being as part of natural cycles. Thus, the Atacama landscape becomes a shifting mirror—an undulating screen onto which another space can be projected, as Verónica Gago would say—where all possible spaces can fit.
